The transition of the Disability Hub MN contract from local grassroots organizations—the Metropolitan Center for Independent Living (MCIL) and the Southeastern Minnesota Center for Independent Living (SEMCIL)—to the Seattle-based firm Direct Interactions has certainly sparked a backlash. Many local advocates and lawmakers view the move as a divestment from our community.

However, the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) justified the shift by citing the previous operators’ declining performance metrics, prolonged hold times, and a failure to reach rural areas. Despite its out-of-state headquarters, Direct Interactions operates with a mission to employ individuals with disabilities. Crucially, the state requires them to exclusively hire Minnesota residents for all remote roles. The hope is that this will offer improved compensation to transitioning staff while delivering a more reliable, centralized service.
